Penile procedures are surgical treatments performed to address a range of conditions affecting the penis, including foreskin problems, curvature, erectile dysfunction, and trauma. These procedures are designed to restore function, relieve symptoms, and improve quality of life.

Circumcision

Circumcision involves the removal of the foreskin and is performed for medical reasons such as recurrent infections (balanitis), phimosis (tight foreskin), or hygiene concerns. It can also be done for cultural or religious reasons. Circumcision is usually a day procedure, performed under local or general anaesthetic, and patients typically recover within 1–2 weeks.

Other Penile Procedures

  • Penile curvature correction (Peyronie’s surgery): Straightens the penis in cases of Peyronie’s disease that cause pain or difficulty with intercourse.

  • Penile implants: Surgically implanted devices that help men with erectile dysfunction achieve firm erections when medications are ineffective.

  • Repair of penile trauma: Procedures to fix injuries such as fractures or lacerations.

  • Vascular or reconstructive surgery: For congenital or acquired abnormalities affecting function or appearance.

Most penile procedures are safe and well tolerated, with a low risk of complications when performed by experienced urologists. Recovery time, potential risks, and follow-up vary depending on the procedure and your individual health.

Penile Procedures (inc. Circumcision)

  • Before any penile procedure, Dr.Farag will review your medical history, medications, allergies, and previous surgeries.

Blood and urine tests may be performed to check your overall health.

For some procedures, imaging or measurements may be needed (e.g., penile ultrasound for curvature correction).

Your fitness for local or general anaesthesia will also be assessed, depending on the procedure.

  • Penile procedures are usually performed as day cases, though some complex surgeries may require an overnight stay.

    • Circumcision: Performed under local or general anaesthetic. The foreskin is removed through a small incision, and the area is closed with dissolvable sutures.

    • Peyronie’s surgery (curvature correction): The penis is straightened using techniques such as plaque incision or plication.

    • Penile implants: Small incisions are made to place the device inside the penis, which can be inflated when needed.

    • Trauma or reconstructive surgery: Techniques vary depending on the injury or abnormality.

The procedure time varies from 15 minutes (circumcision) to 1–2 hours for more complex surgeries. After the operation, you will be monitored in recovery before going home.

  • Recovery depends on the type of procedure performed:

    • Circumcision: Mild swelling and discomfort are common; pain is usually managed with paracetamol or ibuprofen. Normal activities can resume in a few days, but sexual activity should be avoided for 4–6 weeks.

    • Peyronie’s surgery or implants: Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common. Strenuous activity is avoided for 4–6 weeks, and sexual activity is typically delayed until healing is complete.

    • Wound care: Keep the area clean and dry; dissolvable sutures do not usually require removal.

Dr. Farag will provide specific instructions for dressing changes, activity restrictions, and pain management.

  • All penile procedures carry some risk, though complications are generally rare in experienced hands. Potential risks include:

    • Pain, swelling, or bruising

    • Infection at the surgical site

    • Bleeding or hematoma

    • Scarring or changes in penile appearance

    • Temporary or permanent erectile dysfunction (depending on procedure)

    • Device malfunction (for penile implants)

Dr. Farag will discuss procedure-specific risks with you in detail prior to surgery.

  • Follow-up is important to monitor healing, assess function, and manage any complications.

    • Circumcision: Typically a review in 1–2 weeks to ensure proper healing.

    • Peyronie’s surgery or implants: Follow-up visits to assess curvature, implant function, or erectile performance.

    • Trauma or reconstructive surgery: May require multiple visits to monitor recovery and cosmetic results.

Dr.Farag will provide guidance on resuming sexual activity, exercise, and long-term care based on the specific procedure.

Any urgent referral will be reviewed within 24 hours.
